Converting a Conventional Vehicle into an Electric Vehicle (EV) BABT
Silva,Jardel Eugenio da; Urbanetz Junior,Jair.
Abstract The electric vehicle (EV) is not a recent invention. Between the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century, most motor vehicles were electric, due to their superior reliability and cleanliness, compared to that of vehicles driven by internal combustion engines (ICE). However, with the development of ICEs and the reduction of their price, electric cars were forgotten. Only almost a century later, they returned in the market due to a significant increase in fossil fuels prices, as well as to a growing environmental concern. EVs present a number of advantages over ICE vehicles: they are simpler and require less use and replacement of parts, resulting in lower maintenance costs; moreover, they do not release pollutants into the...

Correlations between thermal environment and egg quality of two layer commercial strains Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Pereira,DF; Vitorasso,G; Oliveira,SC; Kakimoto,SK; Togashi,CK; Soares,NM.
Heat stress limits the productivity of laying hens, as reflected by egg production and egg quality. The present study aimed at showing the correlations between egg quality parameters and environmental variables recorded on the day eggs were laid and on the previous days. Birds were housed in battery cages in a commercial poultry house. Main component analyses were used to verify associations between environmental and production variables, and Pearson's linear correlation tests were used to further investigate those associations. Analyses were carried out separately for to layer strains, Dekalb® White and Hy-Line® w36, and the variables egg weight (g), eggshell weight (g), specific gravity (g/cm³) and eggshell percentage (%) were compared with the...

Cost Heterogeneity and the Potential Savings from Market-Based Policies AgEcon
Newell, Richard G.; Stavins, Robert N..
Policy makers and policy analysts are frequently faced with situations where it is unclear whether market-based instruments hold real promise of reducing costs, relative to conventional command-and-control approaches. We develop rules-of-thumb that can be employed with minimal amounts of information to estimate the potential cost savings associated with marketbased policies, with an application to the environmental policy realm. Our hope is that these simple formulae can aid policy analysts and policy makers in the early stages of exploring alternative policy instruments by helping them identify approaches that merit greater attention and more detailed analysis. We illustrate the use of the rules-of-thumb with an application to nitrogen oxides control in...

Could a diet enriched with n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids be considered a promising way to enhance the immune defences and the resistance of Penaeid prawns to environmental stress? ArchiMer
Chim, Liet; Lemaire, Pierrette; Delaporte, Maryse; Le Moullac, Gilles; Galois, Robert; Martin, Jean-louis.
The prawn Penaeus stylirostris (Stimpson), when fed for 28 days with n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA)-enriched feed pellets, demonstrated an enhanced resistance to variations in environmental parameters (a decrease in temperature and salinity over a 4-day period from 28 degreesC to 17 degreesC and from 35 parts per thousand to 10 parts per thousand respectively) and an improvement in their immune defence potential, i.e. increased agglutination titre of plasma and increased respiratory burst of haemocytes.

Cross-Border Environmental Management and the Informal Sector: The Ciudad Juarez Brickmakers' Project AgEcon
Blackman, Allen; Bannister, Geoffrey J..
The considerable difficulties associated with cross-border environmental management are compounded when polluters are unlicensed micro-enterprises such as auto repair shops and traditional brick kilns; such "informal sector" firms are virtually impossible to regulate in the conventional manner. This paper describes an example of an innovative and promising approach to the problem: the Cd. Juarez Brickmakers' Project, a private-sector-led, binational initiative aimed at abating highly polluting emissions from Cd. Juarez's approximately 350 informal brick kilns. We draw three lessons from the Project's history. First, private-sector-led cross-border initiatives can work -- indeed they may be more effective than public sector initiatives -- but they require...

DEBUNKING THE MYTHS OF GM CROPS FOR AFRICA: THE CASE OF BT MAIZE IN KENYA AgEcon
Odhiambo, Benjamin; Bergvinson, David; Mugo, Stephen; De Groote, Hugo.
Empirical evidence from research on Bt maize in Kenya puts to rest most concerns raised against GMOs (not responding to farmers' needs, expensive, benefiting agro-business, risk of decreased biodiversity), but does indicate that contamination of local varieties is likely and buildup of insect resistance possible, requiring careful monitoring and evaluation.

Decoupling Farm Payments: Experience in the U.S., Canada, and Europe AgEcon
Ogg, Clayton W.; van Kooten, G. Cornelis.
Commodity payments in Europe and North America are production based, encouraging greater chemical use and cropping area. Thus, each region undermines the other’s price supports at the expense of the environment. Countries can, however, sever the link between yield levels and payments. Allowing farmers to exit agriculture poses challenges for the US, but perhaps not for Canada and the EU.

Dermatophilosis in sheep raised under rotational grazing systems on irrigated pastures in the Brazilian semiarid region Ciência Rural
Vieira,Vanessa Diniz; Correa,Franklin Riet; Vilela,Vinícius Longo Ribeiro; Medeiros,Márcia Alves de; Morais,Dayana Firmino de; Santos,Antonielson dos; Feitosa,Thaís Ferreira; Almeida Neto,João Leite de.
ABSTRACT: Seventeen outbreaks of dermatophilosis are reported from three farms affecting Santa Inês and Santa Inês x Dorper sheep that were reared in irrigated areas with rotational grazing at a stocking rate of 50 to 100 sheep per hectare, in the Brazilian semiarid region. Most outbreaks occurred after rains and affected sheep of different ages, with morbidity rates of 0.77% to 31%. Clinical signs were dermatitis with crusts that stood out easily and left areas of alopecia. Dermatophilus congolensis was isolated in cultures in 5% sheep blood agar by means of Haalstra’s method. Histologically, the epidermis showed extensive multifocal areas of ortho and parakeratotic hyperkeratosis with intracorneal microabscesses and presence of D. congolensis. Sheep...

DESTINO DE RESÍDUOS DE INCUBATÓRIOS DA AVICULTURA NO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO: ADEQUAÇÃO À LEGISLAÇÃO E POSSIBILIDADE DE USO ECONÔMICO AgEcon
Kobashigawa, Estela; Murarolli, Rafael Azevedo; Gameiro, Augusto Hauber.

Determination of the chemical composition and functional properties of shrimp waste protein concentrate and lyophilized flour Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Brasileiro,Olivaldo Lacerda; Cavalheiro,José Marcelino Oliveira; Prado,João Paulo de Sousa; Anjos,Alinne Gouveia dos; Cavalheiri,Thais Tereza Brandão.
Wastes from the seafood industry can be easily processed into products with new forms of use. The present study was aimed at determining the chemical composition and functional properties of shrimp waste protein concentrate and lyophilized flour. The raw material used in this study consisted of waste (head) of Litopenaeus vannamei. The protein concentrate was obtained by ethanolic extraction, being subsequently submitted to drying in oven at 70° C, while the flour was obtained by lyophilization of shrimp wastes. Moisture, ash, protein and calcium contents showed significant difference between fresh shrimp head waste samples (IN) and protein concentrate and lyophilized flour samples. The protein content for protein concentrate (PC) and lyophilized flour...

Déterminisme de la croissance de l'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, en Bretagne : Méthodologie d'élaboration d'un modèle global. ArchiMer
Dormoy, Jean-marc.
Based on a four years survey of Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas growth in the main shellfish farming areas of Brittany from 1989 to 1992, this report is a first attempt to explain the differences between sites and years. The determinist growth models do not suit to this objective, for methodological and practical reasons. Nevertheless, they provide the conceptual basis of a global model by identifying the reliable environmental parameters for a statistical explanation of growth results. The present study proposes a methodology for a global statistical model using the main stages of the ecological and biological processes of shellfish growth. These propositions are based on the analysis of the determinist model's constraints, and also on the identification...

Diagnosis and evaluation of fungi presence in the air of two different ventilation sytems for broiler houses Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Gigli,ACS; Baracho,MS; Nääs,IA; Silva,RA; Zago,R; Dall'Anese,FP.
Intensive broiler production in tropical climates requires adequate air circulation to control heat stress. Excess of air speed may lead to dust production and reduction of air quality and, consequently, production parameters. Brazilian regulations prohibit the presence of pathogens that may deteriorate air quality, and the presence of fungi in the air inside the poultry houses is limited to 750CFU/m³. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of fungi in two distinct types of broiler houses. The research compared two types of air ventilation: conventional (G1) and positive tunnel ventilation (G2). The fungi were collected using a dust sampling pump, with the air flow calibrated to 1.5 L/min. The filter impregnated with dust was submitted to...

Do Lower Prices For Polluting Goods Make Environmental Externalities Worse? AgEcon
Brennan, Timothy J..
Lower prices for polluting goods will increase their sales and the pollution that results from their production or use. Conventional intuition suggests that this relationship implies a greater need for environmental policy when prices of "dirty" goods fall. But the economic inefficiency resulting overproduction of polluting goods may fall, not rise, as the cost of producing those goods falls. While lower costs exacerbate overproduction, they also reduce the difference between private benefit and the total social cost--the sum of private and external costs--associated with that overproduction. We derive a test, based on readily observed or estimated parameters for conditions in which the latter effect outweighs the former. In such cases, making a dirty good...

Données économiques maritimes françaises 2016 ArchiMer
Kalaydjian, Regis; Girard, Sophie.
The "French Maritime Economic Data" report is periodically published by Ifremer since 1997. It presents an economic assessment of the French maritime activities, their position in the national economy and in the world competition, as well as the significance of non market public services. Maritime activities in the industrial sector are assessed using a standard metrics to facilitate the periodical update of the report: turnover, gross value added, employment, number of enterprises, exports. These indicators are expressed at national level. The public sector is described by annual budgets, number of staff and personnel costs, broken down into the different public policy functions. Regional indicators are provided on activities whenever relevant and...

Donor effect on cultured pearl nacre development and shell matrix gene expression in Pinctada margaritifera reared in different field sites ArchiMer
Ky, Chin-long; Broustal, Floriane; Koua, Manaarii Sham; Quillien, Virgile; Beliaeff, Benoit.
Understanding the respective roles played by donor and recipient pearl oysters in pearl quality determination in relation to the environment is a challenge for the pearl industry. In most Pinctada species, pearl size is mainly related to recipient oyster growth performance, but also relies to some extent on the biomineralisation activity of the pearl sac, a tissue that originates from the donor oyster mantle. We examined donor effect on pearl size in response to culture in the lagoons on Arutua and Apataki atolls. Overall nacre weight and thickness were greater in Arutua than in Apataki, but sensitivity to the environment differed between donors. Some donors were associated with significantly heavier and thicker nacre in Arutua (I group), while others had...
